Commercial activity

In addition to his business with the Kunstkammer, Spengler had been active in the retail industry for many years. When he returned from abroad after a short trip, he took on an assignment from the office of his brother-in-law, Johann Jacob Fröhlich. In the winter of 1794/95 he traveled through Sweden to Norway on this matter , where Spengler and his brother-in-law set off for East India in 1798 under royal permission with valuable cargo . However, they were boarded at sea by French privateers in March 1799 and shipped to Bordeaux . Because of the long procedure for the release of your freight, it lost a lot of its value, which is why Spengler decided to return to Copenhagen immediately. Once in his hometown, he devoted himself fully to his work in the museum.

After the death of his brother-in-law, Spengler took over the administration of the Chamber of Commerce until his daughters reached the age of majority.

Kunstkammer

In 1803 Spengler made a trip to Berlin , Dresden and Vienna to study the art there.

When his father died in 1807, Spengler took over his art chamber.

Around 1820, Spengler moved to part of the royal art collection and decided to open a private collection . The Kunstkammer, which had shrunk in favor of Spengler's private collection after some works had been excluded, was referred to the Statens Museum for Kunst .

In 1825 Spengler became the inspector of the Statens Museum for Kunst and its collection and from 1837 was the director's contact person. Spengler became a member of the Justice Council in 1825 , knighted by Dannebrog in 1829 and finally in 1837 City Councilor of Copenhagen.

Since 1817 he was also a member of the “Royal Danish Society for Patriotic History”.

In addition to various art-historical treatises, Spengler had also published a catalog on the fire in Christiansborg Palace in 1827 .

Art Collection and Death

Spengler was never in a relationship with any woman in his life and lived with his sister, who shared his interest in art with him.

After the death of his sister in 1835, Spengler's health deteriorated steadily and only 4 years later, on March 1, 1839, Johan Conrad Spengler finally passed away.

Johan Conrad Spengler left behind an important collection of hand drawings by national and international artists.

His inheritance was passed on to the state and most of the hand drawings by international artists were auctioned off at auctions abroad.
