Johan Didrik Behrens (born February 26, 1820 in Bergen , Norway , † January 29, 1890 in Kristiania, now Oslo ) was a Norwegian composer and choir conductor .

He began studying theology in Kristiania, but dropped out to devote himself to singing. In music he was essentially self-taught , but later had lessons from Friedrich August Reissiger . As a student, he founded a men's quartet during the 1840s , which enjoyed great popularity and which formed the basis of a 12-piece male choir . He succeeded Halfdan Kjerulf as conductor of the Norwegian Student Choir (Studentersangforeningen) and remained in this position for 40 years. In 1847 he founded another choral society (Handelsstandens Sangforening), and he was in charge of this society for 40 years. In 1875 he founded the Elitechor Johaniterne.

As a publisher , he published a total of 41 choir books comprising more than 700 compositions for male choirs. Some of these compositions come from his own hand. Numerous popular songs appeared here for the first time, including a. Today's Norwegian national anthem , Yes, vi elsker dette lands .

In 1869 and 1878 he received royal awards: the Order of Saint Olav and the Merit Medal of Oskar II.
