Johan Koren (born July 6, 1809 in Bergen , Norway ; † October 3, 1885 ibid) was a Norwegian doctor and zoologist .

Life

Johan Koren was born in Bergen in 1889 as the son of shop owner Claus Koren (1779–1830) and his wife Johanne Rubach (1790–1840). He attended high school in Bergen and then studied medicine in Kristiania , today's Oslo. In 1836 he passed the medical exam. He worked as a surgeon for the military as early as 1833 . In 1838 he was appointed military surgeon in the Bergen Infantry Brigade. He held this position until 1854.

Already during his studies Koren showed an interest in botany and took part in field collections with Mathias Numsen Blytt (1789–1862). The plants he collected can now be found in the Bergen Museum , with which Koren came into increasing contact from 1842 due to his interest in natural history . In 1844 he published several scientific treatises on the Norwegian marine fauna together with the Swedish naturalist Magnus Vilhelm von Düben . At Düben's suggestion, the position of curator for the museum's zoological collections was created in 1846 and filled with Johan Koren. He also taught natural sciences from 1850 to 1872 at the Tanks School, where the future zoologist and businessman Herman Friele (1838-1921) was his student. Koren's further work was shaped by a close collaboration with Daniel Cornelius Danielssen , who joined the board of directors of the Bergen Museum in 1852 and became its president in 1864. The three-volume work Fauna littoralis Norvegiae was created in collaboration with Michael Sars . Koren and Danielssen also described much of the animals collected by the Norwegian North Sea Expedition between 1876 and 1878. Koren was chief curator from 1874 until his death on October 3, 1885. The newly created position of second curator was filled with Olaf Scheveland Jensen (1847–1887), and in 1882 another curator was added, Fridtjof Nansen .

family

Johan Koren married the widow Rebekka Dorthea Ring Olberg (1811–1887) on June 2, 1850, whose son from his first marriage was the future actor Johannes Brun (1832–1890). Johan and Rebekka had the daughter Alvilde Rosalie Christiane Koren (1841–1929). Her grandson, Hans Peter L'Orange , became an important art historian and classical archaeologist .
