Michael Sars (born August 30, 1805 in Bergen , Norway , † October 22, 1869 in Christiania , Norway) was a Norwegian clergyman and biologist .

He wrote numerous initial descriptions of hydrozoans and other marine animals, and was one of the first zoologists who, in addition to the external characteristics, also observed and recorded the way of life of the animals. In 1850 he refuted the abyssus theory of the English zoologist Edward Forbes by dredging in Norwegian fjords and off the Lofoten , according to which life is not possible below a water depth of about 500 meters.

He is the father of the marine biologist Georg Ossian Sars , the historian Ernst Sars and the singer Mally Lammers (1850–1929), who was married to the composer and opera singer Thorvald Lammers . His daughter Eva (1858–1907) was Fridtjof Nansen's wife .

Sars had been a corresponding member of the Royal Academy of Sciences in Berlin since July 26, 1855 . In 1860 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
