Life

Thorvald Lammers is considered the most important Norwegian singer of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He was married to the singer Mally Lammers (1850-1929), a daughter of the zoologist Michael Sars .

At the age of ten, Lammers had already mastered the instruments violin , viola and piano . Later he also took singing lessons. In 1870 he studied with Fritz Ahrlberg in Stockholm and in 1871 with Francisco Lamperti in Milan . 1871 Lammers made his debut as Oroveso in the opera Norma by Vincenzo Bellini in Christiania Theater in Oslo. He worked there from 1874 to 1877, but when the theater fell victim to a fire, Lammers had to look for another engagement. Lammers traveled abroad where he studied singing and choral music.

After his stay abroad he founded his own choir, the later Cæciliaforeningen , which he directed as a conductor for thirty years. Lammers composed several songs and choral works. He also plays an important role in Norwegian folk music. Inspired by a lecture by Ingebret Moltke Moe , he started a tour in the 1890s that took him across large parts of Norway. On this tour he sang ballads by Magnus Brostrup Landstad Norske Folkeviser (Norwegian folk songs). He was also the editor of two small booklets on Norwegian folk music. Tekst og toner (1901 and 1902), which were published several times. Lammers was also the editor of the book “Store Musikere” (Great Musicians) (Aschehoug & co, 1912). The content of the book begins with Johann Sebastian Bach , whom he greatly admired, and ends with Robert Schumann . From 1899 Thorvald Amund Lammers received an artist grant. Lammers died in Aker on February 8, 1922 and was buried on Vår Frelsers Gravlund in Oslo.
