Heiberg was the son of Peter Andreas Heiberg , his mother was Thomasine Gyllembourg-Ehrensvärd . He studied mathematics and aesthetics (= philosophy) in Copenhagen and graduated with a doctorate in 1817. Between 1819 and 1822 Heiberg stayed with his father in Paris .

In 1822, Heiberg became a lecturer for the Danish language at Kiel University , where he taught until 1825. During this time he got to know the writings of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel , which influenced his work. In 1828 Friedrich Kuhlau set his libretto " Elverhøj " to music , which resulted in the most popular Danish opera . In 1831 Heiberg married the actress Johanne Luise Pätges, who rose as Johanne Luise Heiberg to become the most famous Danish actress of her time. Young Sören Kierkegaard was one of the admirers of the Heibergs . He published his first polemical texts in Flyveposten , a magazine published by Heiberg.

After his return, Heiberg worked as a theatrical poet at the Royal Theater , of which he became director in 1849. He directed this theater until 1856. During this time he established vaudeville as a new form. With these innovations, which he brought with him from Paris, he gave the Danish theater new impulses and thus became a pioneer of realism in Denmark.

Johan Ludvig Heiberg died at the age of 68 during a summer stay at Bonderup Castle. The burial took place on Holmens Kirkegård in the Danish capital Copenhagen .
