Johan Peter Gumbert

Johan Peter Gumbert (born January 23, 1936 in Nijmegen , † August 18, 2016 in Leiden ) was a Dutch historian .

Life

Johan Peter Gumbert was the son of Dr. Hans Ludwig Gumbert (1903–1994), an antiquarian who ran the Utrecht bookstore and the JL Beijers auction house. After finishing school at the Stedelijk Gymnasium Nijmegen, he studied classical studies at the University of Leiden .

During the last year of his studies in Leiden Gumbert was assistant to Gerard Isaäc Lieftinck (1902-1994), custodian of the manuscripts and then lecturer for medieval manuscripts at the University of Leiden, and after completing his studies joined the staff. In 1979 he succeeded his mentor Lieftinck and became the last professor of Western palaeography and codicology at the University of Leiden.

Private

Gumbert was married to the classical scholar Marijke Hepp, whom he had met at the University of Leiden. With her he had two daughters and a son.
