Johan Tornberg (born July 12, 1973 in Pajala ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach , who played in the Elitserien for Brynäs IF , VIK Västerås HK and Malmö Redhawks from 1990 to 2001, among others .

Career

Johan Tornberg began his career as an ice hockey player at Kiruna IF , for whom he was active from 1990 to 1993 in Division 1, which was still second at the time. Then the defender received a contract with the reigning champions Brynäs IF , for which he ran up in the following two seasons in the Elitserien . During the 1993/94 season, he was also used in Division 1 for the Gävle HF . In the 1994/95 season, the left shooter failed only in the playoff final with his team at HV 71 Jönköping . For the 1995/96 season he left Brynäs and played for three years each for their league rivals VIK Västerås HK and Malmö Redhawks , before he had to end his career in 2001 at the age of 28 due to injury.

Following his career as a player, Tornberg worked as a youth coach and assistant coach for the professional team of his former club VIK Västerås HK. He took over from Per Bäckman as head coach at Västerås in the 2006/07 season, but left the club in 2009 after he and his family were threatened by supporters of the club. The 1998 world champion works for various Swedish television stations as a commentator on ice hockey games.

International

For Sweden Tornberg took part in the Junior World Cup in 1993 , as well as the World Cup in 1998 , where he was world champion in the latter and scored the decisive goal in the first final game against Finland.
