history

The previously free area on the ridge of the Wienerberg was built from the 1920s as part of the urban housing program of the Red Vienna . Between 1929 and 1931, Karl Schmalhofer , one of the most important architects of the time, realized a large residential complex that was a hybrid between the block construction and the garden city concept. The settlement called Rasenstadt was one of the centers of the social democratic rebels during the Austrian Civil War in 1934. Several resistance fighters against National Socialism also had their headquarters here. Immediately after the end of the Second World War, the residential complex was named after the resistance fighter Johann Mithlinger, who was executed in 1944 , and a memorial plaque was placed for him and other freedom fighters.

Building description

The settlement is located between Raxstrasse in the north, Neilreichgasse in the east, Sahulkastrasse in the south and August-Forel -Gasse in the west. It consists of 24 almost identical residential buildings, which are grouped symmetrically and contain a total of 990 apartments. There is a spacious green area between the houses. Two streets run within the settlement, Ernst-Ludwig- Allee and Fritz-Pregl- Allee. A children's playground is located on the south side of the site. The individual buildings are grouped into rows and have three floors with a hipped roof, with the middle component being raised and covered by a flat roof. The rather plain facades are structured by a few pointed bay windows and corner cornices. On Raxstrasse there is a cubic component with a storefront, originally a garage.

Ten years after the settlement was built, 16 fairy-tale pictures made of terracotta and painted ceramics were attached to the outer facades. Several artists such as Jan Hendrik Foitik, Karl Perl or André Roder were involved.
