From 1895 Schmalhofer studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Vienna with Victor Luntz until 1898. In the following 10 years he worked for various architectural offices, including Carl Holzmann . In 1908, Karl Schmalhofer got a job at the Vienna City Planning Department, where he remained until his retirement as senior city planning officer in 1934.

meaning

Along with Karl Ehn, Karl Schmalhofer is one of the most important architects in the Vienna City Planning Office during the interwar period. He created in this function several large Volkswohnung palaces called municipal residential buildings and regarded as his most famous work Amalienbad . Stylistically, his buildings have romantic-cubist characteristics before he too found functional simplicity in the design in the 1930s.
