Carl Holzmann
Carl Holzmann (born February 22, 1849 in Schüttwa , Bohemia ; † September 14, 1914 in Baden near Vienna ) was an Austrian architect .
Life
Carl Holzmann learned the trade of bricklayer. After stays in Germany and Upper Austria, he settled in Vienna . He worked in Liesing for a master builder and also attended Mathias Prem's construction school. From 1873 to 1875 he was a building foreman for the city master builder Sonnleithner and master builder Johann Sturany . From 1875 to 1877 Holzmann studied at the Technical University with Heinrich von Ferstel . He then worked for Union-Baugesellschaft , where he was involved in the construction of the Palace of Justice as a deputy foreman and as a draftsman in the construction of the Hofburg.
In 1885 Holzmann received the master builder license and founded his own construction company, which he initially ran successfully. In 1906 insolvency proceedings were initiated against the company, which had probably come about due to previous bad speculations. As a result, he had to sell all of his real estate and carried out building contracts from town and country until his death.
meaning
Carl Holzmann began with a strict historicism in his buildings . Later buildings show decorative forms of Secessionism. Buildings near the city center were designed by him in a representative manner, while buildings on the periphery often have elements of the homeland style . Holzmann often bought old buildings and then built new buildings in their place according to his own plans. He used elements of all the styles that were modern at the time, worked skillfully, but was generally not very innovative in terms of innovations and was more in the mainstream of modernity.
