The Johann-Philipp-Reis-Schule Friedberg is an independent vocational school in Friedberg (district town of the Wetteraukreis ). Since January 1, 2012, the school has had the status of an independent vocational school (SBS). It is the first and so far only vocational school in the Hessian Wetterau district to have this status. Since 2005, the Johann-Philipp-Reis-Schule Friedberg has participated in the Hessian model project “Self-Responsibility Plus” (SV +) and was thus one of 17 Hessian vocational schools that sought the path to self-employment right from the start. The school is named after Philipp Reis (1834–1874).

The school was opened on October 27, 1833 as the “Sunday School for Crafts Apprentices” and at that time accommodated 25 apprentices. In 1933 the designation of the “industrial vocational school” was introduced. In 1973 the school was named “Vocational School of the Wetterau District in Friedberg” and in 1985 it was named “Johann-Philipp-Reis-Schule”, which is still under the short form “JPRS”.

location

The school is located in the south of Friedberg (Hessen) in the Wetterau district. The former US military area "Ray Barracks", where Elvis Presley did his military service in Germany, borders directly on the school grounds .

Architecture and buildings

The school grounds are home to a large main building, which is divided into four sections. In the same building, the Friedberg Adult Education Center also maintains various classrooms, which, however, are spatially separated from the classrooms. Next to the main building there is a sports hall with two changing rooms and a small outdoor area. The main building was renovated until May 2013. In the course of the renovation work, a new entrance area was created and a "front office" was set up to relieve the secretariat and to offer the students a direct point of contact for everyday problems. There are also various workshop facilities and computer rooms for the individual departments.

history

19th century

After it was founded as a “Sunday School for Crafts Apprentices” on October 27, 1833 with a total of 25 apprentices, in 1848 the trade school was founded. In 1870 the school expanded its subject areas to include the trades of bricklayers, carpenters, construction and machine fitters, white binders and painters. The school operation took place in today's Friedberger Museum. Shortly before the start of the First World War, the school was relocated to the newly built "Haus des Handwerks" in Friedberg.

20th century

In 1933 the school was finally given the name of the “Gewerbliche Berufsschule”. In 1964, the company moved to the new class and workshop rooms on Friedensstrasse in Friedberg. In 1973 the school was given a new name and from this point on it was called the "Commercial School of the Wetterau District in Friedberg". The first open days followed in December 1980. Five years later, the main building is seamlessly expanded with an extension, the sports hall is inaugurated and the name is changed to "Johann-Philipp-Reis-Schule". Another two years later, workshops for the students are built in a new construction phase.

21st century

In 2004 the school celebrated its 40th anniversary at the Friedensstrasse location. In August 2006, the former headmaster Sigwart Langsdorf was retired after more than 25 years in office, and his previous deputy Peter Stelz took over the post of headmaster. Thomas Remmert became the representative. In 2012 the school was significantly modernized. A new logo was designed and the school's Facebook page went online in November 2012. The newly designed and completely revised homepage with mobile design followed. At the beginning of May 2013, renovations were completed in the entrance area and the school's media center was opened. On May 25, 2013 the headmaster Peter Stelz died after a short and serious illness. The temporary headmaster Maximilian Philipp was officially adopted on January 15, 2014 and replaced by Jutta Tschakert as the new headmistress on February 3, 2014.

The target group are students with extended full-time compulsory schooling or with compulsory vocational schooling. Self-directed learning

The school advertises with a teaching concept that integrates different teaching methods into everyday teaching. Special emphasis is placed on group work and mutual communication of the results obtained. The pupils should work independently on materials and then exchange ideas with their classmates in order to inform them about the material they have just worked on. Various teaching techniques are also used, such as the group puzzle or “laying structures”. Self-directed learning is used in the vocational high school and in parts of the part-time school forms.
