Johann (Pfalz-Gelnhausen)

Johann von Pfalz-Birkenfeld (born May 24, 1698 in Gelnhausen , † February 10, 1780 in Mannheim ) was Count Palatine and Duke of Zweibrücken-Birkenfeld zu Gelnhausen .

Life

Johann was the younger son of Duke and Count Palatine Johann Karl von Birkenfeld-Gelnhausen (1638–1704) from his second marriage to Marie Esther (1665–1725), daughter of Baron Georg Friedrich von Witzleben zu Elgersburg.

He was General Feldzeugmeister and commander of all troops in the Electoral Palatinate , a knight of the Order of the Palatinate Lion and the Order of St. Hubert . Johann was also governor of the Palatinate Duchy of Jülich and commander of the Jülich Fortress and lived mainly in Mannheim. After the death of his brother Friedrich Bernhard in 1739, he followed him in the Birkenfeld deputate in Gelnhausen.

Marriage and offspring

Johann married Sophie Charlotte von Salm-Dhaun (1719–1770), daughter of the Wild and Rhine Count Karl von Salm-Dhaun, in Dhaun in 1743 , and had the following children with her:
