Johann Asch

Johann Asch (born January 5, 1911 in Duisburg - Hochfeld ; † January 8, 1990 in Rheinhausen (Duisburg) ) was a German local politician ( SPD ).

Johann Asch joined the SPD in 1929, of which he was a member until his death.

Biographical data:

  • May 1, 1929 joined the SPD
  • As an SPD member temporarily (1933) in protective custody
  • employed by Krupp Rheinhausen since August 1, 1934
  • Member of the City Council of Rheinhausen / Niederrhein from 1946 to 1974
  • Chairman of the SPD parliamentary group in the Rheinhausen city council: 1954–1961
  • From March 29, 1961 to December 31, 1974 he was mayor of the city of Rheinhausen. Thus he was the last mayor of Rheinhausen, since the city lost its independence on January 1st, 1975 and was incorporated into Duisburg
  • Chairman of the Arbeiterwohlfahrt Rheinhausen, honorary chairman of the German Olympic Society in Moers and honorary member of the school camp association in Höchstenbach
  • He received the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon on December 21, 1971
  • Since 1972 chairman of the citizens' initiative for the preservation of the district of Moers
  • From May 1975 to October 1979 he was a member of the Council of the City of Duisburg
  • On December 14, 1979 he was appointed honorary mayor of the city of Duisburg.

During his time as mayor, Rheinhausen experienced a great economic boom. The name Johann Asch is associated with the establishment of numerous municipal facilities, such as kindergartens, schools, day care centers for the elderly, youth centers and the Rheinhausenhalle. He was a staunch opponent of the municipal reorganization in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia and was involved, albeit ultimately unsuccessfully, in the action of citizens' will against the incorporation of Rheinhausen into Duisburg.

He was married twice and had four sons and six grandchildren. A square in the Duisburg-Rheinhausen district is named after him.
