List of honorary citizens of Duisburg
The city of Duisburg or the city of Hamborn and other cities that belong to Duisburg today have granted the following people honorary citizenship. The listing is done chronologically according to the date of award:
- 1888: Friedrich Hammacher , member of the Prussian state parliament , honorary citizen of Duisburg and Ruhrort and, since 1898, of Meiderich
- 1890: Otto von Bismarck , honorary citizen of Duisburg and since 1895 also of Ruhrort and Meiderich
- 1911: August Thyssen , industrialist; Honorary citizen of Hamborn
- 1912: Karl Lehr , former mayor, honorary citizen of Duisburg
- 1917: Paul von Hindenburg , Field Marshal General , honorary citizen of Duisburg, revoked by the City Council of Duisburg on January 21, 2013
- 1918: Georg Freiherr von Rheinbaben , Minister of State and Upper President of the Rhine Province , honorary citizen of Duisburg
- 1923: Fritz Thyssen , industrialist, honorary citizen of Hamborn , but withdrawn in 1940 by Reich Interior Minister Goebbels after expatriation
- 1928: Julius Weber , Privy Councilor of Commerce , honorary citizen of Duisburg
- 1928: Franz Wieber , member of the Reichstag, honorary citizen of Duisburg
- 1964: Heinrich Kost , mine director, honorary citizen of Homberg
- 1976: August Seeling , former mayor, honorary citizen of Duisburg
- 2000: Josef Krings , former mayor, honorary citizen of Duisburg
Johann Asch , the last mayor of Rheinhausen , was appointed honorary mayor on December 14, 1979 .
Other awards from the city are:
- the Golden Ring of Honor , with which extraordinary services to the city of Duisburg are honored. Previously, the sponsors were mostly former mayors.
- the Mercator plaque for special merits, especially in the scientific or artistic field. So far, sponsors have been, for example, the founding rectors of Duisburg University, as well as heads of culture and general music directors , but also the actor Hans Caninenberg and the painter Heinz Trökes
- the city ring , which can be awarded to council members and senior community officials for special services to the self-government of the city
- the city badge , for example for ten years of membership in the council or for citizens who have done a lot for the city
- the city medal in silver or bronze to members of the district councils or other persons for long-term local political services
