Johann Bödiker

Johann Bödiker (born May 1, 1641 near Stettin ; † August 27, 1695 in Cölln ) was a German educator and author.

Life

The son of a farmer from the vicinity of Stettin attended the Cölln high school for ten years and studied at the University of Jena from 1662 . In 1665 he took over the office of preacher in Parstein and at the beginning of 1673 went back to his former grammar school as vice-principal, which he ran until his death. He advocated the use of the German language at school and coined the term German philology for the first time .

Bödiker wrote a large number of occasional poems . In 1681 he wrote a treatise on the Great Comet in German, in which he spoke out against superstition and comet prophecy. At the end of almost forty years of activity, his catalog raisonné comprised 250 items.
