Johann Baptist Henkel

Johann Baptist Henkel (born June 5, 1825 in Neustadt an der Saale , † March 2, 1871 in Tübingen ) was a Bavarian , German botanist , doctor and pharmacologist . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Henkel ".

Henkel was the son of the pharmacist Peter Joseph Henkel, who later had a pharmacy in Würzburg, went on to become a pharmacist and passed the Bavarian pharmaceutical state examination in 1847 with the top grade. In 1851 he took over his father's pharmacy in Würzburg. Since that did not satisfy him, he sold the pharmacy and studied medicine from 1855 with his doctorate in 1858. He also dealt with medicinal and poisonous plants and botany. In 1859 he completed his habilitation in Tübingen, where he became a private lecturer in pharmacy and pharmacology and later a professor there.

With Wilhelm Christian Hochstetter , he introduced the araucaria family .
