Johann Baptist Streicher (born January 3, 1796 in Vienna ; † March 28, 1871 there ) was an important piano maker in the 19th century.

Life

Streicher was the son of Andreas Streicher and Nannette Streicher . He learned the craft of piano maker in his parents' piano factory. In 1823 he became a partner and, after the death of his parents in 1833, sole owner of the company, which developed numerous patents under his leadership and achieved international recognition. The German piano maker Johann Bernhard Klems was one of his most famous students .

Johann Baptist's son Emil Streicher sold the company to the Stingl brothers in 1896 because his son Theodor Streicher did not want to take it over, but only wanted to work as a composer.

In 1893 the Streichergasse in Vienna- Landstrasse (3rd district) was named after him.

He rests in his father's grave of honor in the Vienna Central Cemetery (group 32A, number 30)

Johann Baptist Streicher was first married to Auguste geb. André married who died on July 1, 1847 at the age of 45. The son Emil Streicher (born April 24, 1836 in Vienna; † January 9, 1916 there) comes from the marriage. He joined his father's company in 1857 and ran it alone after his father's death.

In his second marriage, Johann Baptist Streicher married the pianist Friederike Müller on January 7, 1849 . The daughter Carolin Johanna, born on October 25, 1849, comes from this marriage.
