Johann Beck (physician)

Johann Philipp Beck (born May 20, 1735 in Riga , † September 2, 1811 in Oranienbaum ) was a German-Baltic surgeon. He acted as senior surgeon and State Councilor to the Russian Emperor Paul I.

Live and act

Beck trained as a surgeon in Kiel and Berlin. From 1755 he worked for the Russian military. He first worked at the country hospital in Saint Petersburg , where he continued his medical education and in 1757 acquired the qualification as a surgeon.

From 1758 to 1761 he took part in all major battles of that time as a field doctor in the Russian army. In 1761 he was transferred to the central artillery administration and then appointed court surgeon. In 1773 he became the personal surgeon of the Grand Duke and later Emperor Paul. In 1781 he enrolled at the University of Frankfurt / Oder to study medicine. He was recognized by the Russian Medical Society as a doctor of medicine without having completed his studies. In 1786 he became personal physician for the children of Grand Duke Paul and in 1796 staff medicus for Emperor Paul.

In 1803 Beck became a member of the Saint Petersburg Medical and Surgical Academy . On July 18, 1781 Beck was admitted to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina with the matriculation number 857 with the academic surname "Euelpistus" .

Beck was married to the Russian Aksinija Timofeevna († 1782).
