from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Brandanus Engelbrecht (born March 7, 1717 in Greifswald , † June 18, 1765 ibid) was a German lawyer and university professor.

Johann Brandanus was the son of the Greifswald rector of the city school Johann Engelbrecht. He began his studies in 1732 at the University of Greifswald and finished them at the University of Helmstedt in 1739 with a doctorate. Because of his sickness and weakness he was unable to realize his plan to attend the University of Göttingen , which was founded in 1732/1734, and returned to Greifswald to live with his family. Here he became a lawyer at the Greifswald court , in 1742 adjunct of the law faculty and in-house counsel at the university. In 1758 Engelbrecht was appointed full professor at the University of Greifswald, and in 1762 he was elected rector of the university. His chronic sickness soon turned infirmity and so he died early.
