Andreas Westphal (doctor)
Andreas Westphal (born February 19, 1720 in Greifswald , † December 16, 1788 ibid) was a Swedish-Pomeranian anatomist and archiater .
Life
Andreas Westphal was the son of the historian Andreas Westphal (1685–1747) and Anna Sophia Gadebusch, daughter of the pharmacist Lorenz Gadebusch. He graduated from the University of Greifswald at the age of 16. He then visited the universities in Berlin and Halle . It was in 1741 at the University of Greifswald to the doctor doctorate . As a private lecturer, he gave lectures on anatomy and physiology . In 1744 he became an adjunct of the medical faculty. In 1754 his application for the chair of medicine was rejected because no medical students were enrolled in Greifswald. Not until 1756 did he become a full professor. In 1763, 1773 and 1774 he was elected rector of the college. In 1767 he was appointed archiatrist.
Andreas Westphal headed the “ Theatrum Anatomicum ” in the university building , which was newly built in 1750. Building on his experiences in Berlin and Halle, he tried to get corpses from hospitals available for anatomical studies from the start of his teaching activity . In thirty years, however, he only managed to get two bodies for anatomical lessons. As with his demands for a surgeon and midwifery school to be set up , most of his applications were rejected by the university administration with reference to the expected costs.
He founded the university's anatomical collection. He made some of the preparations himself with his students. For 200 thalers he acquired the anatomical collection of Professor August Schaarschmidt, for which he was only reimbursed for the costs stated after lengthy efforts. During his time as dean , the botanical garden was laid out in 1763 .
According to the Swedish Pomeranian Medical Order of 1772, he gave lectures on forensic medicine . In 1776 he handed over his offices to Karl Friedrich Rehfeld.
Honors
In 1744 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
