Ferdinand Sommer (doctor)

Ferdinand Bernhard Wilhelm Sommer (born May 25, 1829 in Bergen on Rügen ; † June 5, 1902 in Greifswald ) was a German professor of anatomy and zoology .

Life

Ferdinand Sommer was the son of the Rügen district judge Carl Sommer.

After attending grammar school in Hamburg, Sommer studied medicine in Göttingen and Greifswald from 1850 to 1855 and was awarded a Dr. in medicine, surgery and obstetrics. From 1857, Sommer worked at the Anatomical Institute of Greifswald University. After his habilitation in 1872, he was appointed extraordinary professor and four years later full professor and director of the anatomical institute in 1880.

In 1893, Sommer became a secret medical council; In 1895 he received the Order of the Crown III. Class. His grave is in the old cemetery in Greifswald.
