Life

Schumacher, son of a butcher, was born in Berlin and spent the first years of his life in Pian , where his parents ran a farm. From 1929 he grew up in Lychen, Brandenburg . From 1931 to 1935 he attended elementary school in Lychen and from 1935 to 1943 the high school for boys in the Hohenlychen country school home, where he graduated from high school. In 1943 he was drafted into the Wehrmacht as a reserve officer candidate. His military service ended in 1944 with a serious war injury in East Prussia. After a stay in Wernigerode, he saw the end of the war in Lychen in 1945. His severe walking disability saved him from imprisonment.

After the Second World War he wanted to study law in Berlin. Since the Kaiser Wilhelm University, for which he was enrolled remotely in 1943, no longer existed, he first attended an interpreting school on Kurfürstendamm, where he was able to expand his school English and acquire a diploma. In October 1946 he began studying agriculture at the Ernst-Moritz-Arndt University of Greifswald, but at the same time he attended anatomy lectures at the medical faculty. After two semesters, he went from agriculture to medicine and added dentistry as a second degree. In 1951 and 1952 he passed the state examination in dentistry and medicine and became a compulsory assistant in pathology and anatomy. In May 1953 he was promoted to Dr. med. and in April 1954 Dr. med. dent. PhD. From 1956 he worked as a specialist in anatomy and from 1959 as a professor with a teaching position and director of the Institute for Anatomy at the University of Rostock (until August 31, 1990). In 1970 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

In 1990 Schumacher retired . He died at the age of 91.
