Friedrich August Gottlob Berndt (born May 14, 1793 in Nantikow , Arnswalde district , Neumark , † December 17, 1854 in Greifswald ) was a German doctor and university professor.

Life

Friedrich August Gottlob Berndt learned the trade of bathers and perfected his medical training with a surgeon in Landsberg an der Warthe . He was later accepted into the Pépinière and took part in the campaign to Paris as a surgeon in 1813/14 . He received his doctorate from the University of Jena in 1814 and completed his habilitation a year later in Landsberg.

In 1816 Berndt was appointed physicist for the Küstrin district. His practical and scientific work earned him such a reputation that after Ludwig Julius Caspar Mende left the Georg-August University in Göttingen in 1824, he was appointed professor of obstetrics and state medicine at the Royal University of Greifswald . Here he represented almost all topics of medicine for a time and brought about significant improvements and expansions of the teaching institute, while at the same time he led a very extensive medical practice. After the reconstruction of the medical faculty, which was largely brought about by his efforts, Professor Berndt worked as a clinical teacher of internal medicine and obstetrics until 1854. In the spring of that year he fell ill with gout and died at the beginning of the following year. In Greifswald he was a member of the Freemason Lodge Carl zu den three Griffin .

On the Rubenow monument erected in Greifswald in 1856 , a relief image of Friedrich Berndt was attached next to the portraits of Johannes Bugenhagen , David Mevius and Ernst Moritz Arndt .

His son Albert Ferdinand Heinrich Berndt (* 1820; † 1879) became a lawyer and was a member of the Prussian House of Representatives from 1855 to 1858. He published a biography of his father in 1856.
