Karl Georg Peter (born July 2, 1870 in Frankfurt (Oder) , † March 16, 1955 in Fischbachau ) was a German anatomist.

Life

Peter grew up in Meissen . In 1890 he obtained his Abitur at the Princely and State School St. Afra in Meißen . In 1890 he began medical study. First at the University of Freiburg , then at the University of Kiel , then at the University of Leipzig , followed by the University of Marburg and finally back in Freiburg. In Freiburg, Peter received his doctorate in 1895 at the anatomical institute with his dissertation "The Spine of the Gymnophions" . His doctoral supervisor was Robert Wiedersheim . From 1897 to 1904 Peter held an assistant and second position as a prosector at the University of Breslau with Carl Hasse , with whom he did not get along well. In 1898 he completed his habilitation in Breslau with a thesis on the origin and functional shape of the Ceylon cranium ( Ichthyophis glutinosis ). In 1904 Peter went to Philipp Stör at the University of Würzburg . This recommended him the embryologist Robert Bonnet in Greifswald. In 1905, Peter became associate professor and in 1917 full professor of anatomy at the University of Greifswald . From 1917 to 1935 he was director of the Anatomical Institute in Greifswald. In 1935 Peter retired. After his retirement he continued his research at the institute and helped with teaching during the Second World War (1939–1945). In 1945 Peter chose Birkenstein in Bavaria as his retirement home. When teaching was resumed at the University of Munich in 1946 , Benno Romeis brought him for lectures and exercises. From 1946 he was involved as a full professor in the reconstruction of the anatomical institute in Munich.

Together with Gustav Born , Alfred Schaper and Hermann Triepel, he was known for improving the method of making anatomical model specimens. He dealt with embryology and microscopic anatomy.

In 1932 he was accepted into the Leopoldina , but resigned in 1935 because they refused to print one of his works.

Karl Peter was a rather sober, quiet person with musical talent. His diligence and dedication made him popular with his students.

For Peter's 85th birthday, the Anatomical Society had planned an honor and applied for the Great Cross of Merit of the Federal Republic. Karl Peter died of severe old age at the age of 84.
