Benno Romeis

Benno Romeis (born  April 3, 1888 in Munich ; †  November 30, 1971 ibid) was a German anatomist and histologist who worked as an associate professor at the University of Munich from 1923 and from 1944 to 1956 as a full professor . For around four decades he was the editor of a standard textbook on microscopic technology , published since 1890 , which has been published under his name after his death until the present day.

Life

Benno Romeis was born in Munich in 1888 as the son of the architect Leonhard Romeis . He obtained the Abitur at the Humanist Gymnasium in his hometown and then studied medicine at the University of Munich from 1906 to 1911 . In addition to his studies, he worked during this time in a private surgical practice and from 1909 as an assistant assistant at the histological-embryological institute of the university, where he also received his doctorate in 1911 and, after continuing to work as an assistant at the histological-embryological institute, five years later at Subject anatomy was habilitated . In 1923 he became associate professor for anatomy, histology and developmental studies at the University of Munich and head of the department for experimental biology at the anatomical institute in Munich.

From 1944 he was full professor for anatomy and from 1947 for histology and embryology and from 1954 director of the anatomical institute and the institute for histology and experimental biology at the university. After the end of the Second World War , he was one of the few university professors who could continue to be employed at the medical faculty of the Munich University without delay. He went in 1956 in the retirement and died in 1971 in his hometown. His grave is in the north-western part of the Bogenhausen cemetery of the Catholic Church of St. Georg in Munich.

Scientific work

Benno Romeis's scientific work focused on the histological examination of endocrine organs and the aging of biological tissues . From 1919 to 1968 he was the long-time editor and co-author of the “Pocket Book of Microscopic Technique”, which was first published in 1890 and which has been published under the title “Microscopic Technique” since 1948 and which, after his death, was established under his name as a standard work on microscopy and histology .

In addition, he acted from 1925 to 1967 as editor of the developmental biology journal "Wilhelm Roux 'Archive for Development Mechanics of Organisms". In 1955/1956 he was President of the Anatomical Society.

Awards

Benno Romeis was a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina from 1926 and a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences from 1942 . He also received the Bavarian Order of Merit in 1963 .
