Life

The son of the Anklam businessman Andreas Westphal attended the council school in his hometown. He then studied first at the University of Rostock and later at the University of Greifswald , where he heard lectures from Johann Friedrich Mayer and Johann Philipp Palthen (1706), among others . In addition to theology, he primarily devoted himself to history and constitutional law. He then traveled to Jena and Halle an der Saale . There he attended lectures by Nikolaus Hieronymus Gundling and Christian Thomasius . In Greifswald he received his master's degree in 1709 .

While Swedish Pomerania was under Danish administration in the Great Northern War , in 1718 the government made him a full professor of poetry and eloquence . Soon after, he also received the professorship for morality and history. In doing so, he acquired a reputation that extends beyond national borders. In 1726 he was elected rector of the university. In the same year he became a foreign member of the Academy of Sciences in Berlin and in 1738 a corresponding member of the Latin Society in Jena. He turned down the offer of a professorship at Uppsala University .

Westphal's students included Friedrich von Dreger , Augustin von Balthasar and Johann Carl Dähnert . He wrote numerous papers on historical and legal topics. As manuscripts he left behind, among other things, a Pomeranian monastery history and a university diplomat .

Andreas Westphal was married to Anna Sophia Gadebusch, the daughter of the Greifswald pharmacist Lorenz Gadebusch. Her son was the anatomist Andreas Westphal the Younger (1720–1784).
