The orchid Vanda lamellata is an epiphytic growing plant from Southeast Asia. It is occasionally used as an ornamental plant.

description

Vanda lamellata grows as a monopodial epiphyte . The shoot reaches a length of 7 to 30 cm and a diameter of 0.5 to 1.3 cm. The two-line, thick leathery, narrow belt-shaped leaves are 12 to 27 cm (up to 42 cm) long and 1 to 2 cm wide. The tip is asymmetrically bilobed.

In April, according to other information from November to December, one or two inflorescences appear each from a leaf axil. The inflorescence axis is 20 to 30 cm long, 5 to 15 (up to 20) fragrant flowers are in the front third. The oval-triangular bracts are 0.1 to 0.2 cm large and pointed. The flower stalk and ovary are white, occasionally slightly pink, and measure 2 to 5 cm. The flowers are fleshy, yellowish with reddish-brown markings, they open wide, their diameter is 2.5 to 3 cm (up to 5 cm). The upward-pointing sepal is inverted egg-shaped to spatula-shaped, 1.6 to 2 cm long and 0.7 to 1 cm wide, abruptly narrowed (nailed) at the base, pointed, blunt or slightly drawn in at the end. The lateral petals are similarly shaped, 2 × 1.3 cm larger, they end rounded, the edge is slightly wavy. The petals are spatulate and slightly smaller than the outer petals. The lip is white or light yellow with red or pink stripes in the lamellata variety , uniformly dark pink in the var. Boxallii . At the base it has a conical, slightly pointed spur. The small side lobes of the three-lobed lip stand upright and are white inside with reddish points. The end of the middle lobe is rounded, cut off, or slightly drawn in. There are longitudinal keels on the lip. The light purple column is 0.3 to 0.4 cm (up to 0.6 cm) long with a yellow stamen .

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.

distribution

Vanda lamellata is native to Southeast Asia; its range is in Taiwan, the Philippines, the Ryukyu Islands, northern Borneo and the Mariana Islands . It is a common and widespread orchid in the Philippines. It occurs from sea level to an altitude of 400 meters. Vanda lamellata grows as an epiphyte in sunny spots, including rocks.

Systematics and botanical history

Vanda lamellata was collected in 1838 by Hugh Cumin near Manila , he sent live plants to the Loddiges nursery in England. The first description was also published in 1838 by John Lindley . The boxallii variety was not found until 1879, also in the vicinity of Manila. Further described varieties are Vanda lamellata var. Calayana and Vanda lamellata var. Remediosae , which, however, are used as synonyms for the aforementioned.
