Johann Buxtorf (Orientalist)

Johann (es) Buxtorf (born January 8, 1663 in Basel ; † June 19, 1732 ibid) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and Hebraist . To distinguish it from his grandfather Johann Buxtorf the Younger and his great-grandfather Johann Buxtorf the Elder, he is usually referred to as Johann (es) Buxtorf III. sometimes also (if his uncle Johann Jakob Buxtorf is considered Johann III.) as Johann (es) Buxtorf IV.

Life

Johann Buxtorf studied in Basel and, after being recognized as a candidate for the ministry, deepened his knowledge of the oriental languages. In 1689 he was appointed preacher at Strünkede Castle in Westphalia. After the death of Baroness von Strünkede, he went to the Netherlands in 1690 to further study the oriental languages. After returning to his homeland, he was elected pastor of Arisdorf in 1694 . In 1704 he followed his uncle to the chair of the Hebrew language at the University of Basel . There he worked as rector in 1720 .
