Johann Jakob Buxtorf
Johann Jakob Buxtorf (born September 4, 1645 in Basel ; † April 4, 1704 there ) was a Swiss Reformed theologian and orientalist.
He was the son of Johann Buxtorf the Younger and studied theology in Basel from 1659. In 1664, after the death of his father, he was given the vacant chair of the Hebrew language at the University of Basel . However, he was immediately given leave and made a study trip through France, the Netherlands, England and Germany from 1665 to 1669. After his return, he worked again at the University of Basel, which he chaired twice as rector.
Buxtorf published the writings of his grandfather Johann Buxtorf the Elder , but hardly published his own works. Numerous translations of rabbinic writings can be found in his handwritten estate. His library was taken over by the University Library of Basel.
His nephew Johann Buxtorf became his successor at the professorship for the Hebrew language .
