Dressel studied theology, in 1771 at the University of Wittenberg and from 1772 to 1773 in Halle . After his successful graduation, Dressel was vice principal at a school in Werder , then principal in Biesental . In 1778 he was given the parish office of the city of Charlottenburg .

In the 18th century, Charlottenburg was a small town whose inhabitants lived from agriculture and cattle breeding or worked at the court. The congregation was in just as miserable a condition as the schools that were then subordinate to the church. The poverty was also great. Dressel campaigned for the improvement of living conditions in his community and reformed the school system in Charlottenburg. On his initiative, the first school building in Charlottenburg was built in Gierkezeile and in 1802 a hospital for the poor.

Dressel wrote two chronicles that made him famous: the so-called “parish chronicle”, which is owned by the Luisenkirche, and the so-called “Dressel chronicle”, which is owned by the district office of Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf in Berlin. Both chronicles tell about the history of the city of Charlottenburg and are unique of their kind.

Dressel also wrote six diaries. The first two volumes are in the Royal Municipal Library in the Administrative Information Center of the Charlottenburg-Wilmersdorf District Office in Berlin. The first volume reports on Dressel's childhood, youth and studies. The second deals with the time before he took office in Charlottenburg. The other four volumes are currently lost.

Dressel was buried in the Luisenfriedhof I in Charlottenburg . The grave no longer exists today.
