Johann Christian Wallmann (born November 13, 1811 in Quedlinburg ; † April 17, 1865 ibid) was a German Protestant theologian of the revival movement .

Life

His grandfather was the enlightened Quedlinburg homeland researcher and mayor of the Quedlinburg Neustadt Johann Andreas Wallmann (born January 29, 1716, † October 13, 1789), he came from the arable bourgeoisie .

Johann Christian Wallmann was converted to awakened Christianity by August Tholuck . After studying theology, he worked as a private tutor with Ernst Ludwig von Gerlach from 1835 . From 1839 he tried to gain a foothold in Quedlinburg. He made a name for himself in public as an awakened Christian in disputes with the Quedlinburg high school director, which, however, was not expedient in Quedlinburg, which was shaped by the Enlightenment. From 1843 to 1848 he was pastor in the Johanniskapelle in front of the city walls. He developed his greatest effectiveness as a mission inspector of the Rheinische Missionsgesellschaft in Barmen (1847–1857) and the Berliner Missionsgesellschaft (1857–1863). He wrote (without ever having left Germany) works on the language teaching of the Nama in today's Namibia and many writings on the activities of the missions, which experienced several editions.

In 1863 he retired to Quedlinburg to his house at Bahnhofstrasse 9 , where he soon died.

The mission station " Wallmannsthal " in South Africa was named after him. A memorial plaque was placed on the house where he was born , Pölkenstrasse 11 , in 1911 .

One great-grandson is the church historian Johannes Wallmann , other descendants - in addition to many pastors and some professional soldiers - the composer H. Johannes Wallmann and the chemist and university professor Klaus Wallmann .
