Johann Christoph Erhard (* 21st February 1795 in Nuremberg ; † 20th January 1822 in Rome ) was a German painter and etcher of romance .

Youth and education

Johann Christoph Erhard was born as the second son of a Nuremberg silver wire manufacturer. His talent for drawing was already evident in his early youth. He visited the kennel 'sche drawing school and went in 1809 at the Nuremberg engraver Ambrosius Gabler in teaching. There he learned to engrave and erase , developing a special inclination for the landscape subject.

During this time, Erhard closely followed the artists Johann Adam Klein and Georg Christoph Wilder ; he went on excursions with them in the vicinity to study nature there. The Russian troops, which frequently passed through Nuremberg between 1812 and 1814, gave him the opportunity to draw horses and military groups.

In 1816 Erhard traveled to Vienna with Johann Adam Klein and did landscape and plant studies in the area. In 1817 he hiked with artist friends in the Schneeberg region , and the following year he visited Upper Austria , Salzburg and the Pinzgau with them . The result of these trips were numerous landscape drawings and etchings, which he also made for art publishers.

In 1819 Erhard went to Rome. There he did landscape studies and worked for various art dealers. Soon, however, he suffered from a serious mental illness, the signs of which had already appeared in Germany. Erhard withdrew and eventually committed suicide.
