Portrait: Johann Friedrich von Schwarzburg-Rudolstadt

Johann Christoph Morgenstern (born August 13, 1697 in Altenburg , † October 6, 1767 in Rudolstadt ) was a German painter as well as common and princely valet .

Life

Morgenstern was the son of Johann Christoph Morgenstern of the same name († February 20, 1725). His grandfather was David Morgenstern.

Morgenster was trained by the portrait painter Tobias Pfeiffer. In Altenburg he worked as a portraitist and received numerous commissions. After 1720 he worked for the ducal court in Saalfeld. He settled in Rudolstadt at Pentecost 1725. He was probably called to the Schwarzburg court by Sophie Wilhelmine von Sachsen-Coburg-Saalfeld . Here he made a portrait of the four-year-old Prince Johann Friedrich on her behalf . Morgenstern had been a court painter since 1736, which gave him some social privileges and enabled him to work largely independently. He enjoyed the protection of the court, was not subject to any guild obligations and was exempt from municipal taxes. When Johann Friedrich took over the government in 1744, Morgenstern created a series of representational portraits for the young prince and other works for his private collection.

He was married to Eleonora Maria (née Kirchnerin). Her sons were the painters Johann Ludwig Ernst Morgenstern (1738–1819) and Friedrich Wilhelm Christoph Morgenstern (1736–1798).
