Johann Ernst von Holwede (* around 1590 ; † after 1654 ) was a German lawyer, Privy Councilor and Chancellor in various German states.

Live and act

Holwede came from the Lower Saxon - Westphalian noble family Holwede from the Hochstift Minden . He was the son of Johann von Holwede and his wife Catharina born. Deterding. His father, with whom the established family line in the Genealogical Handbook of the Nobility begins, was wealthy in Petershagen and at times worked as an episcopal ministerial bailiff in Rahden .

Nothing is known about Holwede's birth and youth. He studied law and graduated with a doctorate . In 1632 he became a councilor in the Chancellery of the County of Oldenburg , which at that time acted both as the county’s highest court and as an advisory body to Count Anton Günther in his government affairs. After the death of Chancellor Johann von Prott on April 7, 1635, Holwede was appointed his successor, but only as director and no longer as chancellor, as the law firm had lost its role as a political advisory body and was increasingly limited to its function as the highest court has been. Due to conflicts over the distribution of tasks with the landdrosten Otto Philipp von Rüdigheim , Holwede switched to the service of the County of Schaumburg as Chancellor in 1638 , but remained an Oldenburg council and was also asked to provide expert opinions in individual cases. At times he seems to have been in the service of the county of Delmenhorst , as he received funds from them in 1647. In 1646 he became Chancellor of the Minden Monastery. When this was awarded to the Electorate of Brandenburg in the Peace of Westphalia as compensation for other losses, Holwede transferred to Brandenburg services, was confirmed in his office and received the title of a Privy Councilor. Thereupon he returned his Oldenburg appointment letter in September 1654.

family

Holwede was born with Agnes, born in Rostock . Rich married. From this marriage came Johann Friedrich von Holwede (1619–1662), who was initially in the Swedish service and later became lieutenant colonel in the Brandenburg service. The sandstone grave slab in the St. Stephanikirche in Helmstedt has been preserved from this.
