Johann Evangelist Helfenzrieder (born December 9, 1724 in Landsberg am Lech , † March 25, 1803 in Raitenhaslach near Altötting ) was a German Jesuit , mathematician and astronomer .

The doctor of theology taught in Ingolstadt and was professor of mathematics from 1770 to 1781.

However, he became famous through the discovery of the comet D / 1766 G1, which bore his name. This was discovered by him on April 1, 1766 in Dillingen an der Donau . Just 8 days later, Charles Messier also discovered this comet. Calculations showed that this comet had a period of four and a half years, but it was never seen again.
