In 1770 he founded the so-called lovers' concerts together with violist Carl Ludwig Bachmann , which he headed as a conductor until 1785. These always took place in the Corsicaischer Saale opposite Monbijou Castle (today Oranienburger Straße ) and were mostly subscription events with their own orchestra and choir. Of the three sons of Johann Friedrich Ernst Benda, Johann Wilhelm Otto Gottlieb Benda (1775–1832), detective and mayor of Landshut (Silesia) , made a name for himself as a translator and writer.
