Johann Christian Brandes (born November 15, 1735 in Stettin , † November 10, 1799 in Berlin ) was a German actor and dramatic poet .

Life

Johann Christian Brandes learned the acting profession at the age of 18. He was involved in the Schuch Society, the theater in Munich and the Seyler's troupe . In Dresden he was supposed to organize an electoral Saxon court theater, but in 1779 he went to Seyler at the Mannheim court theater and finally to Hamburg. From 1785 to 1786 he headed the city's theater; In 1788 he left the stage.

As an actor, Brandes was relatively insignificant; he became known for his plays and comedies.

His wife Esther Charlotte Brandes (* 1746 in Prussian-Lithuania ; † May 13, 1786 in Hamburg), née Koch, was one of the best-known actresses of her time, particularly in the melodrama "Ariadne auf Naxos" (after Gerstenberg , with music by Georg Benda ) shone. Her daughter Charlotte Wilhelmine Franziska (* May 21, 1765 in Breslau ; † June 13, 1788 in Hamburg ) was Gotthold Ephraim Lessing's godchild and was usually called Minna. She was a singer and piano composer.
