Giulio Cardinal Tonti (born December 9, 1844 in Rome , Italy , † December 11, 1918 there ) was a diplomat and cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Giulio Tonti completed his theological studies in Rome with doctorates in philosophy , Catholic theology , canon law and civil law . He received on 21 December 1867, the sacrament of holy orders and was then Professor of Theology at the Pontifical Athenaeum "De Propaganda Fide" . From 1879 to 1882 he was in the service of the Apostolic Nunciature in France , from 1882 to 1892 he worked for the Apostolic Nunciature in Portugal .

In 1892 Pope Leo XIII appointed him . the titular archbishop of Samos and to the apostolic delegate for Santo Domingo , Haiti and Venezuela . The episcopal ordination received Giulio Tonti by Cardinal Vincenzo Vannutelli . In 1893 the Pope appointed him Apostolic Administrator of Port-au-Prince and Titular Archbishop of Sardis , and in 1894 Archbishop of Port-au-Prince. In 1902 he became Apostolic Nuncio in Brazil and Titular Archbishop of Ancyra , from 1906 he carried out the same task in Portugal. In 1910 he had to flee Portugal because of the revolutionary unrest.

In 1915 Pope Benedict XV took him . as a cardinal priest with the titular church Santi Silvestro e Martino ai Monti in the cardinals college. In 1917 Cardinal Tonti became Prefect of the Congregation for Religious and a member of the Council for the Administration of Welfare of the Apostolic See.

He died on December 11, 1918 in Rome and was buried in the Campo Verano cemetery there.
