Johann Friedrich Hertzog (born June 6, 1647 in Dresden , † March 21, 1699 in Dresden) was a German lawyer and poet.

Life

Hertzog attended the Princely School in Meißen , studied at the University of Wittenberg from 1666 , then worked as a private tutor for a few years and returned to Dresden in 1674, where he made a living as a lawyer until the end of his life.

Hertzog is the author of the once widespread evening song "Now the day has ended and no more sun shines" , which was once found in the Protestant church hymn books . He wrote it in 1670 in Wittenberg as a parody of a secular song with the same beginning by the chamber and court musician Adam Krieger .
