Adam Krieger (born January 7, 1634 in Driesen , † June 30, 1666 in Dresden ) was a German composer and church musician.

Life

Krieger initially received his training from Samuel Scheidt in Halle and continued it from 1650 in Leipzig . In 1655 he won against his competitor Werner Fabricius in filling the position of organist at the Leipzig Nikolaikirche , which was vacated by Johann Rosenmüller's sudden departure. Krieger set the focus of his work in figural music. The founding of a Collegium musicum in Leipzig goes back to Krieger. In 1657, Elector Johann Georg II called him to the Saxon court. There, Krieger gave the elector's daughter lessons on the clavichord . In 1658 he was appointed court organist.

Krieger died in Dresden in 1666 and was buried in the Frauenkirchhof .

Krieger composed and wrote numerous songs, and in 1657 his first song collection appeared. His works were characterized by simple folk-song melodies. His best known song is Now the day has ended , it can be found in the hymn books of the Protestant churches. Another well-known song is Der Rhein'sche Wein , which describes the numerous effects of enjoying Rhine wine .
