Johann Friedrich Krause (constable)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Johann Friedrich Krause (born August 13, 1747 in Breitenbach , † March 14, 1828 in Hoof , today districts of Schauenburg ) was one of the most important sources of the Grimm brothers' fairy tale collection alongside Dorothea Viehmann . He appears in their comments on their fairy tales as Sergeant Krause .

Life

Dragoon sergeant Krause was the son of the schoolmaster von Breitenbach, who worked for 52 years. Even his ancestors worked as pastors and teachers in Wolfhager Land.

On January 14, 1779, he married the mayor's daughter Anna Margarethe Hühne in Hoof, and their son Johann Adam was born in the same year . His wife died on December 23, 1806.

Krause joined the Landgrave of Hesse-Cassel's army in 1767 and in 1787 became a corporal in the Garde du Corps regiment , later quartermaster in the Gens d'Armes regiment . He was dismissed as unfit for service in 1795 because of a hip problem.

Connection to the Brothers Grimm

In 1811 Krause wrote down various fairy tales, purrs and tales from the Hoof spinning rooms in a notebook. In Kassel he gave this booklet to the Brothers Grimm, whom he also knew personally. He demanded for each fairy tale a discarded trousers of Wilhelm Grimm , as the dress size was the same.

He also left his own recording of the conversations from the spin-offs of the municipality of Hohf in 1811 to the brothers.

Fairy tales going back to Krause

From Krause come KHM 16 The Three Snake Leaves , KHM 48 The Old Sultan and KHM 54 The Satchel, the Hütlein and the Hörnlein (at least in the version of the 1st edition) as well as KHM 16a Mr. Fix and Ready (only 1st edition). On KHM 111 The Trained Hunter , he provided a comparative version in Grimm's Note. The origin of KHM 92 The King of the Golden Mountain (Grimm's comment: According to a soldier's story ) cannot be determined.
