Johann Karl Gärtner (born September 1, 1950 in Augsburg ) is a German politician . He was federal chairman of the right-wing Republicans from 2014 to 2016 .

Gardener completed vocational training as a carpenter and as a businessman . In 1987 he joined the Republicans. From 1987 to 1994 he was district chairman in the Aichach-Friedberg district and from 1990 to 1995 district chairman in Swabia . Gärtner was state chairman of Bavaria from 1994 to 2017 . From 1997 to 2014 he was Vice President of the Republicans and served in this capacity as an executive. On August 16, 2014, he was elected federal chairman to succeed Rolf Schlierer at the federal party conference in Rosenheim . At the federal party congress on November 5, 2016 in Bächingen , he decided not to run again. Kevin Krieger was elected to succeed him.

In terms of local politics, Gärtner has been a district councilor in the Aichach-Friedberg district since 1990 . From 1992 to 2014 he was a supervisory board member of Kreiswohnbau.

For Gärtner, the Islamophobic and right-wing populist organization Pegida is a “revolt of the decent against indecent politics and media lies ”.

Gärtner is Catholic, married and has two children.
