from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Handlos (born December 9, 1939 in Rusel ; † June 10, 2013 in Regen ) was a German lawyer , publisher , journalist and politician ( CSU , REP , FVP , FDP ). He was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament (1970–1972) and the German Bundestag (1972–1987). Handlos was a founding member of the Republicans (1983) and the Freedom People's Party (1985). From 1983 to 1985 he was party leader of the Republicans.

Life

After graduating from high school in 1960 at the humanistic grammar school in Pfarrkirchen , he did his military service in the armed forces. His last rank was first lieutenant in the reserve. He studied political science (diploma) and law (state examinations). He was also a trainee at Passauer Neue Presse and Münchner Merkur . In 1966 he became the domestic policy editor at Münchner Merkur .

In 1974 he bought the property that would later become the Lindberg Farmhouse Museum , which opened in 1975. In 1978 he founded the magazine Schöner Bayerischer Wald , which he published himself. He also worked as a travel writer in Spain and chaired the Bavarian Forest tourism working group.

Political party

From 1973 to 1979 Handlos was the state chairman of the CSU's military policy working group .

After having been a member of the Junge Union and the CSU for many years , Handlos founded the Republican Party (REP) on November 26, 1983, together with Ekkehard Voigt and the journalist and later long-term federal chairman Franz Schönhuber , of which he was chairman until 1985. The annoyance about the so-called “billion dollar loan” that the then CSU chairman Franz Josef Strauss had arranged for the GDR played an important role in the establishment of the new party ; This was viewed by the right-wing conservatives as a betrayal of the party's anti-communist attitude and a renunciation of the goal of German unity .

In 1985 he founded - after differences with Franz Schönhuber about the course of the party "The Republicans" - the Freedom People's Party and received 0.4 percent of the votes with it in the Bavarian state elections in 1986 . In 1987 he joined the FDP .

MP

After Handlos had been press spokesman for the CSU parliamentary group from 1967 to 1970 , he was a member of the Bavarian state parliament (district of Kötzting, Regen, Viechtach / Niederbayern) from 1970 to 1972 . There he was a member of the Committee on Public Service Issues. From 1970 to 1972 he was for the CSU Broadcasting Council of the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation .

From 1972 to 1987 he was a member of the German Bundestag . On July 8, 1983, he left the CDU / CSU parliamentary group and was a member of the Bundestag as a non-attached member until the end of the 10th electoral term . He was a member of the Defense Committee of the German Bundestag and from 1976 to 1980 he was a member of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe and the Western European Union .

Franz Handlos has always entered the Bundestag as a directly elected member of the Deggendorf constituency . Most recently he achieved the highest first vote result of the CSU in the federal election in 1983 with 73.6% . In 1987 he stood as an independent direct candidate in the Deggendorf constituency and received 17.2% of the first votes.

Franz Handlos made about 20 speaking contributions as a member of the Republicans. He and Voigt, who had also converted from the CSU, mainly dealt with Ostpolitik - where they criticized the German government's too lax attitude towards the GDR - and later criticized the other parties in the Flick affair , especially the CDU and CSU. For this they received several applause from the SPD. There were no heated arguments with them from either side of Parliament.
