Johann Georg Burckhard

Johann Georg Burckhard , latinized Janus Gregorius Betulius , (born September 24, 1684 in Sulzbach ; † November 4, 1764 in Wolfenbüttel ) was a German lawyer and archivist from Brunswick-Lüneburg and a secret councilor.

Life

Johann Georg Burckhard came from the Upper Palatinate and was the son of the Protestant pastor, Magister Georg Christoph Burckhard at the city church in Sulzbach, and brother of the later city physicist Johann Heinrich Burckhard in Wolfenbüttel and the brother of the Wolfenbüttler librarian Jacob Burckhard (1681–1753). From 1699 he attended high school in the city of Schleusingen in the Duchy of Saxony-Zeitz . Then he went to study law at the University of Jena .

From 1716 he worked as a clerk in the Brunswick residence city of Wolfenbüttel . Two years later he was appointed court and feudal secretary. As such, he took over the management of the ducal archive in 1726. In 1728 he was promoted to the feudal council and in 1729 to the court councilor. Most recently, from 1749, he was the Privy Councilor at the court of Wolfenbüttel.
