Johann Georg Gmelin (chemist)

Johann Georg Gmelin (born August 17, 1674 in Münchingen , † August 22, 1728 in Tübingen ; frequent name affix: the elder ) was a German pharmacist and chemist .

Johann Georg Gmelin the Elder was born on August 17, 1674 in Münchingen as the son of the white tanner Samuel Gmelin. After studying at Stockholm University , he was employed at the local chemical laboratory in 1699. Seven years later, in 1706, he returned to his hometown to marry a chemist's daughter. He opened a well-known pharmacy in Tübingen and also became a university lecturer. When he died on August 22, 1728, he left three sons: Johann Georg of the same name , who became the discoverer, and Johann Konrad (1707–1759) and Philipp Friedrich (1721–1768), each of whom became physicians.
