Johann Georg Friedrich Rudolf Helm (born February 17, 1931 in Hanau ; † May 17, 2000 in Königstein im Taunus ) was a German legal scholar .

Life

Johann Georg Helm came from a middle-class family, his father Otto was a doctor for paediatrics ("pediatrician"), his grandfather Karl Helm was a professor for ancient German studies in Marburg .

After attending school in Hanau and graduating from high school in Alsfeld, Helm studied law from 1949, first in Marburg and in 1950 when he moved to Frankfurt , shaped by his grandfather, who was interested in history and cultural history. In Frankfurt, his formative academic teacher was Wolfgang Preiser . In 1954, the first state examination in law was passed in Frankfurt, followed by the “legal preparatory service” in Frankfurt, Hanau and Kassel until 1958. During this time he was preparing for his doctorate, during which Preisler accompanied him as a doctoral supervisor. The Great State Examination in Law took place in 1958, PhD took place in 1958 in Wiesbaden with an excellent evaluation. The thesis on international law had the topic "The legal position of the civilian population in war in its historical development" with Hans-Jürgen Schlochauer as second reviewer and was assessed summa cum laude. The habilitation took place in 1965 for the subjects civil law and commercial law with a thesis on liability for damage to freight, studies on liability for damages from freight transactions and on the competition between contractual and non-contractual claims for compensation (published in 1966).

Despite offers from the private sector, in view of the example of his grandfather, Helm decided to pursue an academic career with a specialization and focus on international and transport law in which his work was recognized and recognized nationally and internationally.

In Frankfurt, from 1965 to 1967, he worked as a permanent lecturer with substitute professorships in Tübingen, Marburg, Freiburg / i. Br. And in Berlin. He followed the call to the chair for private and commercial law at the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg in 1967 and was appointed full professor and head of the seminar for commercial law on January 2, 1968. He taught in Nuremberg / Erlangen until his retirement in 1996.
