Wolfgang Preiser

Wolfgang Preiser (born February 20, 1903 in Frankfurt am Main ; † October 31, 1997 there ) was a German legal scholar .

Life

He attended the Goethe-Gymnasium in Frankfurt am Main, at that time a reform high school with its own " Frankfurt curriculum ". After graduating from high school, he first completed an apprenticeship in banking and then worked in a bank. He then studied law in Munich and Frankfurt am Main . With a dissertation in commercial and corporate law, he was awarded a Dr. iur. PhD. He then worked as a judge in Frankfurt am Main and the surrounding area.

In 1943 he was awarded a doctorate in art academies in Italy in the 15th-17th centuries. Century in Frankfurt am Main for Dr. phil. PhD. Since 1947 he had been teaching art history there.

In 1946 he completed his habilitation at the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University in Frankfurt am Main for the subjects of criminal law , criminal procedural law and international law and was appointed associate professor in 1948. After he had turned down a call to Saarbrücken in 1954 , he was appointed full professor. At the same time he became director of the Institute for the History of International Law, which was newly founded at his suggestion. This gave this subject the status of an independent academic discipline. In 1957/58 Preiser was dean of the law faculty. In 1971 he retired.

His students include Alexander Böhm , Johann Georg Helm , Klaus Lüderssen and Karl-Heinz Ziegler .

Services

Preiser was best known for his comprehensive treatises on the history of international law. He devoted himself particularly to ancient and early international law as well as the early international legal systems of non-European cultures. He also sought to determine the methodological foundation of the subject.
