Johann Georg Rosenberg
Johann Georg Rosenberg (* 1739 in Berlin ; † 1808 there ) was a German painter, etcher and engraver . Cityscapes made up an essential part of his work.
Life
Johann Georg Rosenberg was a student of Carl Friedrich Fechhelm and Bernhard Rode . In 1764 and 1765 he stayed in the Netherlands and France to continue his education. In 1765 he was accepted into the Académie royale in Paris as Jean Rosenberg . In the following years he made stage brochures for theaters in Hamburg , Danzig and Königsberg , and from 1770 to 1772 he worked for the ducal court in Braunschweig .
In 1773 Rosenberg finally returned to Berlin. He gave up theater and decorative painting and devoted himself to portraying the Berlin cityscape. Between 1773 and 1785 he created a series of twenty large-format etchings with prospectuses of Berlin streets, markets and squares for the Berlin publishing house Jean Morino & Co. The colored sheets published in 1786 are considered a high-ranking work of German vedute graphics of the 18th century. They convey a vivid picture of what was then Berlin and its citizens. In addition to graphic works, Rosenberg created a number of oil paintings with views of Berlin.
Rosenberg was one of the Berlin artists who offered their city views not only as paintings or simple prints, but who were able to tap into an additional group of buyers with colored and overpainted prints.
