Johann Gottfried Hoffmann (born July 19, 1765 in Breslau ; † November 12, 1847 in Berlin ) was a German statistician, political scientist and economist.

Life

Johann Gottfried Hoffmann studied law at the Universities of Halle and Leipzig, became a private tutor in Memel in 1788 and took over the administration of the Pinnau factory near Wehlau in 1792 , but gave up this position again in 1798.

In 1803 he was employed as a building assessor at the East Prussian War and Domain Chamber, took part in the preparatory work on the legislation of 1808 and in 1807 received the full professorship in practical philosophy and camera sciences at the University of Königsberg .

In 1808 he became a State Councilor in the Ministry of the Interior, in 1810 director of the statistical office he set up and professor at the University of Berlin .

He was involved in all legislative proposals for internal administration in 1811/12.

Shortly after his arrival in Berlin, State Chancellor Carl Fürst von Hardenberg wrote the following brief letter to Interior Minister Friedrich von Schuckmann in January 1816:

" The current Secret Legation Rath Hoffmann will from now on deal exclusively with the management of the statistical office and the council who is presenter for him in the third section of the Königl. Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Since he has already responded negatively to the invitation of the local university to take part in its work, I ask Ew. Your Excellency herewith sincerely relinquish him from the professorship previously assigned to him. "

He left the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1821 to return to his academic teaching post.

Hoffmann was a member of the Lawless Society in Berlin . In 1832 he was accepted as a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences . From 1843 he was a corresponding member of the Russian Academy of Sciences in Saint Petersburg .

After retiring from his post in 1838 for advanced age, he died on November 12, 1847.
